About the Program

The Fern and Manfred Steinfeld Program in Judaic Studies began with the establishment of an endowment to support a scholar of Judaism in 1993.  Two years later, the program was named the Manfred and Fern Steinfeld Program in Judaic Studies in recognition of the generosity of the major donors to the program and to the University of Tennessee.  Generous contributions since then have allowed for the growth of the program.

The Fern and Manfred Steinfeld Program in Judaic Studies offers scholarly programming including conferences, symposium and several lecture series including the Karen and Pace Robinson Lecture Series on Modern Israel and the Abraham and Rebecca Solomon and Ida Schwartz Distinguished Lecture Series in Judaic Studies.  It is home to the Journal of Jewish Identities.
